    Ingredients

    • 3 large eggs, beaten

    • 1/3 cup Italian-style breadcrumbs
    • 1/3 cup panko
    • SAUCE
    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 2 large tomatoes, cored, seeded and chopped (approximately 2 cups)
    • 4 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 can (28-ounce) crushed tomatoes
    • 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes, or to taste
    • 1/4 cup thinly sliced fresh basil (approximately 1 large sprig), plus more for garnish if desired
    • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

    • 8 ounces fresh mozzarella, cut into 8-10 thin slices
