Well, for starters, you’ll know exactly what’s in it: no margarine masquerading as butter, no age-old dried herbs or dehydrated garlic either. With just 5 ingredients—and that’s including the salt—you can bake up a restaurant-worthy loaf in just 3 steps. Here’s how to do it: Choose a soft Italian loaf, cakey on the inside with a thin crust. (Baguettes don’t offer enough crumb to soak up the buttery garlic mixture and crustier loaves end up a little too crunchy after a second baking.) Preheat oven to 400°F. Slice the loaf into 1-inch thick slices leaving about a 1/2-inch intact at the bottom. Don’t fuss over this too much, just don’t cut all the way through. Place the loaf on a large sheet of aluminum foil.
