    In her wonderful book, Ms. Klivans calls for oversized cookies, but I like them just as well cooked on the small side -- the perfect accompaniment to a cup of Chai.

    Ingredients

    • 2¼ C. unbleached all-purpose flour
    • 2 tsp. baking soda
    • ¼ tsp. salt
    • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
    • 1 tsp. ground ginger
    • ½ tsp. ground clove
    • ¾ C. (1½ sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
    • 1 C. packed light brown sugar
    • 1 large egg
    • ¼ C. molasses
    • about ¼ C. granulated sugar
